Import Export Code (IEC) — Everything You Need to Know Before You Start Trading Across Borders.
ChecklistIEC.pdf
You have identified a foreign buyer. Your product is ready. The deal is almost done. Then someone asks - do you have an IEC? If you do not know what that is, you cannot ship a single unit out of India. And if you are planning to import goods, the same rule applies.
The Import Export Code is not optional. It is the starting point for any business that wants to trade internationally.
What Is an IEC
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is mandatory for any person or entity that wants to import or export goods from India.
Without a valid IEC, customs will not clear your shipment. Banks will not process foreign trade transactions. And you cannot avail export benefits under government schemes.
Who Needs an IEC
Every individual, proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, or Private Limited Company that intends to import or export goods or services needs an IEC before beginning international trade.
The only exceptions are individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use — not commercial purposes.
Documents Required
For a Company / LLP:
- PAN Card of the entity
- Certificate of Incorporation / LLP Agreement
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate of current account
- Aadhaar / PAN of the authorised signatory
- DSC of the authorised signatory
- Address proof of registered office
For a Proprietorship:
- PAN Card and Aadhaar of the proprietor
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate
- Address proof of the business
The Registration Process
The IEC application is filed online on the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) in Form ANF 2A. The application fee is ₹500, payable online. Once documents are uploaded and the application is digitally signed, the IEC is typically issued within 1–2 working days.
Key Things to Know
Lifetime validity - IEC is valid for the lifetime of the entity. No renewal is needed, but it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal between April and June - even if no details have changed. Failure to update results in deactivation, which means shipments can be held at customs.
One PAN, one IEC - IEC is linked to the entity's PAN. A single PAN cannot have two IECs.
No periodic returns - Unlike GST or ROC compliance, IEC does not require periodic filings. The only annual obligation is the DGFT portal update.
IEC and FEMA
For businesses receiving foreign payments, FEMA compliance runs alongside IEC. Inward remittances must be reported to the bank with the correct purpose code. IEC is the gateway -FEMA governs the money that flows through it.
The Practical Takeaway
Getting an IEC is fast, inexpensive, and entirely online. If your business has any international ambitions - even a single export order - apply before you need it.
